Time Away at The Wall

Alex Taylor is raising money for Time Away

Walking Hadrian's Wall · 8 August 2026

Time Away is a unique charity which aims to give families with disabled children ‘time away’ from the pressures of their everyday lives to enjoy free holiday stays across the UK.

Story

Back in 122AD Emperor Hadrian (thats the fella in the middle) decided to build a wall, now in 2026 Alex (the bald one) and Will (the one with the embarressed look on his face) are going to be walking the length of it to raise funds for Time Away.

86 Miles in (hopefully) 4 days, one overweight middle-aged man with dodgy knees and one 14 year boy who'd probably rather be anywhere else than walking with his dad ..... what can possibly go wrong????

Along the way we have some family and friends planning to join us for stints but start to finish will just be the two of us against the world. Once we get to the end will we still have enough energy to walk the final few miles from Wallsend to the coast at Tynemouth to make it a full coast to coast trip, who knows?

We are doing this to raise funds for Time Away, a fantastic charity that aims to provide whole family respite breaks for families of children with a long-term life changing diagnosis no matter where in the UK they live.

When a child receives a life changing diagnosis it can have a huge impact on the whole family, routines need to change, Doctors become a regular staple of family life, stress and anxiety levels increase and many parents find themselves simply having to give up work to look after their children. Time Away was created to offer families a chance to escape for just a brief moment, to unwind together, strengthen their bonds and create memories that will last. That is why the idea of this challenge appealed so much, as beside the physical challenger of walking a marathon every day, it is our own opportunity to strengthen our own bond whilst helping to raise money to extend the same opportunity to another family.

In the beginning Time Away started it worked exclusively in conjunction with Sykes Cottages and their fantastically generous homeowners to offer self-catering breaks, but recently they have also moved into providing adapted breaks in accomodation with all the equipment necessary to ensure that any child regardless of their diagnosis can enjoy a break with their family.

We would love to raise enough to cover the cost of one family break in one of these destinations, so please do consider giving whatever you can to help give another family that crucial time together, because every family deserves the chance of Time Away together.

Please also be assured that 100% of donated funds will go to Time Away, we are fully funding the trip ourselves.
