The Journalists Charity supports journalists and their dependants who are in need whether through ill health or poverty or just plain bad luck. Whether it is through a grant to help through a tough time or with accommodation at our sheltered housing complex.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In September last year we lost our fantastic colleague Tom Leece. He was only 32 years old.

A week before the tragedy Tom had taken part in the Standard Chartered Great City Race with a bunch of his fellow Times sub-editors, and this year we thought it would be fitting to raise some money for charity in his honour.

On July 18 at 7pm we will be taking on hundreds of other teams in a 5km race around some of the City's most famous landmarks.

Tom Leece was a fantastic journalist. He loved storytelling and when those stories were told he wanted them to be told correctly. He was a great writer, historian and pedant - all the things that a Times sub-editor should be.

In consultation with Tom's family, we have chosen to raise money for The Journalists' Charity, an organisation founded by Charles Dickens in 1864 to help journalists and their dependants who are going through hard times.

More than 150 years later, the organisation remains committed to providing advice, emergency support and financial assistance to individuals working across the industry, at a time when journalism has arguably never been more important to society.

We have 16 runners from across the subs' desk, newsdesk and picture desk taking part in the race. They are:

Chris Arden, Bob Bounds, Darryl Chamberlain, Jasmine Charles, Caz Creighton, Sadie Gray, Toby Green, Andy Hepburn, Lee Levitt, Bill Lodge, Kris Mullin, Tom Payne, Lauren Probert, Sam Thomson, Simon Wells and Charlie Wright.
