My Story

Two years ago, on 12th August 2021 I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer (ILC). I discovered fairly quickly that there was little known about this type of cancer, despite the fact that 10-15% of all Breast Cancers diagnosed are ‘Lobular’.

Key facts we know about Lobular Breast Cancer

* The forgotten cancer

* It does NOT have its own specific treatment

* Lobular cancer rarely shows up on Mammograms & screening

* It is in fact the 2nd most common type of Breast Cancer

* Despite a different biology it is treated the same as the more common type ‘Ductal’

* It is often called the ‘sneaky’ one because it can go undetected

There is a lot to learn about this type of cancer and researchers & scientists at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) in London believe that with more funding, specifically targeted to Lobular research, they could learn & understand the biology of ILC. This next step is vital in getting the treatment needed to improve outcomes for all those diagnosed.

The Lobular Moonshot Project, launched by Dr Susan Michaelis earlier this year, is helping to raise some of the £20million needed for a 5-year research project into ILC by the ICR. I am now joining Susan, a fellow Lobular Breast Cancer sufferer, in helping to raise much needed funds.

Many of you will know that my journey to health has not been a straightforward one, with my most recent hurdle being the effect that Endocrine Therapy has had on my heart function. As a result of this, and at the advice of my Cardiologist, I am not taking on any physical challenges right now, so I have decided to take on an Arty/Crafty project.

Starting from 20th August 2023, I will attempt to create 100 small handmade, art cards, each of them individual designs, in just 10 days. This will be quite a challenge since not only have I been struggling to feel creative lately, I'm also just home from hospital recovering from an emergency appendix surgery. Wish me luck!

If any of you who are kind enough to make a donation would like one of the art cards, please hop over to my social media pages and let me know. They'll be available on a first come first serve basis and photos will be shared on my Facebook page. Find me by searching Tina Ashton Art.

My huge thanks to you for supporting me to raise these vital funds.
