Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our Just Giving page!

Myself and my Dad are both running our first marathons at the Windermere Marathon on 18 May.

We are raising money for Birmingham hospice (formerly St Mary's) as they looked after two of my grandparents brilliantly in their final days. My grandmother (who we called Lalla) died when I was nine and I know my family were very grateful to the staff there. I saw this for myself last September when my Grandpa was diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer last August. It came as a real shock and we hoped he would have at least a few more months but he died just 27 days after receiving the diagnosis. His final week was spent in the hospice and the staff were fantastic, not only in the care they gave him but with my grandma and all of the family. I went to visit him after work and they let me stay as long as I liked.

Grandpa had always taken an interest in running and sport in general. We used to do sprint time trials between two cricket stumps in his back garden which led to Dad famously pulling his hamstring just a few weeks before doing the Great North Run! Grandpa would be proud that we were both doing a marathon and for such a great cause.

Anything you can give would be much appreciated and would help other people's friends and family to be as well looked after in their final days as my two Grandparents were.

Birmingham Hospice is the new name for Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice and John Taylor Hospice.

Our vision is a future where everyone with a life-limiting illness will live and die with dignity and in comfort.

Offering personalised support at home, in local communities or at the hospices, we help people across Birmingham to live well with their illness, right up to the very end of life.
