100km self-supported run · 14 December 2024

We’re Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), and we’re a suicide prevention charity. We host a helpline for people affected by suicide, as well as vital online resources for anyone who needs them.

Story

This year has been about rediscovering my love for running which is one of the tools I use for supporting my own mental health. So far I have run just under 2000km and competed in a number of marathons and ultra-marathons. I have decided to that I want to finish this year with my biggest challenge to date which will be a self-supported 100km run starting in West Byfleet and following the River Wey and River Thames into London.

I am doing this challenge on behalf of Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) as having lost friends and colleagues over the years to suicide I recognise how important the work they do is.

Here are some statistics for you:

- 1 in 5 people will have suicidal thoughts at some point in their life

- Each year there are 200,000 suicide attempts

- 125 people die every week, which is 18 people a day, and one every 90 minutes (the length of a football match....)

- Suicide continues to be the biggest killer in men under 50 and the suicide rate for young women under 24 has seen the steepest increase since records began.

CALM recognise that it doesn't have to be this way and are trying make a change. They've got loads of tools and resources to help people find the support they need, including a life-saving helpline for people who can’t see a way forward, have lost someone to suicide, or are worried about their friends or loved ones.

£12.20 is enough to fund one potentially life-saving call.
