Tom's fundraiser for West Mercia Search & Rescue

Tom Strangward is raising money for West Mercia Search & Rescue

100 golf holes in a day & 3 peak Challenge in 24hrs · 17 July 2026

We save the lives of vulnerable people and help bereaved families start the process of closure by finding their missing loved ones. A completely volunteer organisation operating across West Mercia with trained team members, vehicles, and boats we responded from bases in Kidderminster and Bridgnorth to 50 searches last year, with 5,000 operational, 5,000 training and 4,000 fundraising hours. 100% of all donations go towards running the rescue team. With a nationally qualified team of 64 land searchers with quad bikes and drones, we also operate on rivers and lakes and have a DEFRA rated Flood Response Team and specialist Sonar Team with a national reputation. Our Incident Command Unit is the planning hub for complex searches and on-line planning systems share information with team and police in real time. We provide education to the community in water safety awareness, with our “Home and Dry” campaign. https://westmerciasar.org.uk/homeanddry/ With the voluntary sector equivalent of an MBE: The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service we have also been recognised with a High Sheriff’s Award and are holders of the inaugural Shropshire Community Foundation Award as “Outstanding Community Organisation”. Our involvement of military personnel in the team has recently been awarded an Armed Forces Gold Covenant. 31 members earned with the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for “Service to UK Search and Rescue”, and a similar number, will receive the King’s Coronation Medal.

Story

As captain of Burghill Valley Golf Club for 2026 I have choose to support West Mercia Search & Rescue for my term and to help them raise funds that goes towards their equipment and training.

Myself and my vice captain Jack Harris will be taking on the 100 hole challenge in one day at Burghill Valley golf club on Friday 17th July. Starting as soon as it’s light or just before to make sure we get the 6 rounds in on time

Following on from this I will also be doing the 3 peaks challenge in 24hrs starting Monday 27th July. The 3 peak I will be covering will be Ben Nevis (Scotland) scafell pike (England) snowdon (Wales)

I’ve chosen to take on these challenges to pay my respects to the volunteers and their dedication and commitment. In certain situations they may be called out to a search and can be out for numerous hours covering all types of terrain.

West Mercia Search & Rescue save people in danger.

Always on-call. Always professional. Always volunteers. They drop everything to respond – the call could come at any time to find someone and save their life. They care deeply about people in danger and train hard to help them.

They are normal people doing quiet heroics, dedication and professionalism for free to your community and those in crisis.

They find missing people, save lives in floods and respond to emergencies alongside partner agencies

They go in to danger and get people out safely. They are the hand reaching to people in need and are the first face they see when all else is lost.

They are called out by the Police and Fire Services when help is needed in finding and saving people in Shropshire, Herefordshire or Worcestershire well-equipped specialists for:

* Search for missing vulnerable adults and children

* Rescue from floods

* Rescue from rivers and other waterways

* Provision of care to anyone whose life is in danger

West Mercia search & rescue are the official Lowland Rescue unit for the West Mercia Police area, operating as part of the UK’s rescue structure alongside Mountain Rescue, the Coastguard, RNLI and Lifeguards.
They are also a registered DEFRA Flood Rescue Boat team, and can be called to respond anywhere in the country when flooding occurs.
