Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune condition in which there is an increased tendency for the blood to clot. The condition can cause strokes, heart attacks, pulmonary emboli and DVTs. In pregnancy, APS is a leading cause of recurrent miscarriage and stillbirth.

Story

I'm raising money for APS Support UK 🙂

When I was young, my 19-year-old sister passed away suddenly. It was a complete shock to the family, as she was perfectly healthy and happy. We were not aware of the underlying health condition that she'd had since birth.

Her diagnosis was "Hughes syndrome" (now called APS syndrome). APS syndrome is a rare auto-immune disease that causes 'sticky blood', which can lead to blood clots and other serious health issues.

Excerpt from their website:

"As of yet, we don’t know why people develop APS, why some patients go on to have blood clots while others don’t, why some women (but not all) have pregnancy problems and why some patients are affected by symptoms more than others – vital research is needed before we can answer these questions."

There is very little known about this disease, in fact there is only one charity in the UK dedicated to its funding and they rely completely on donations!

This is why I have chosen this charity - not just to raise funds, but to also raise awareness - and to hopefully help others get a diagnosis and treatment, before it's sadly too late.

Thank you for reading 🙂
