Unlocking Memories Through Music: Support Movement 4Memory Dementia Groups
I am Zoe the Dementia Coordinator for Tonic Health a wellbeing charity in South Lincolnshire. I am privileged to oversee our dementia project, which includes our Movement 4Memory social groups which run across Spalding, Holbeach and Surfleet.
These weekly groups are for individuals living with early-stage dementia and their unpaid carers. These weekly groups have become an essential lifeline for them, where we provide a safe, welcoming supportive space where everyone can relax, connect with others, and access vital guidance and signposting, but overall have fun.
Each session starts with seated exercise designed to maintain mobility and independence with plenty of laughter! We connect with a cuppa, cake and a catch-up followed by an activity. This is where we would like to raise money to facilitate live music and other activities into the groups.
WHY MUSIC MATTERS
Music has an extraordinary ability to unlock memories and reach people with dementia in ways that words sometimes cannot. Lifting mood and reducing anxiety, encouraging natural movement and sparking spontaneous dancing and singing.
When we have previously had a live singer into our groups, members who are often quiet or whose dementia has progressed light up, sing along knowing every word and get up onto the dance floor. It is truly magical to witness.
How You Can Help
We are reaching out to help fund live music and other specialised activities to entertain our groups regularly.
Every single donation - no matter how small - goes directly towards providing these uplifting experiences for our members living with dementia and their families who help care for them.
Your support means the world to our amazing staff and volunteers, who go above and beyond to make Movement 4Memory groups so popular and essential within our local community.
£5 goes towards helping with the cost of refreshments.
£10 goes towards material for crafting sessions
£20 goes towards bringing in a flower arranging session
£75 pays to bring a singer to entertain the groups
Dementia is the UK's biggest killer, it affects us all and it devastates live.
1 in 3 people born in the UK today will go on to develop dementia in their live time.
Please consider donating today and sharing this page with others who may wish to support Tonic Health's Dementia Project. Together, we can help turn each small act of kindness into lasting impact."
