Story

Right… most people slow down in their 90s.

Tony has decided to cycle **over 500 miles** in his 92nd year instead.

In **May 2026**, Tony will take on an incredible **505-mile cycling challenge** over **12 days**, setting off from Chorley and tackling a spectacular route across the North of England—coast to coast and back again.

This isn’t just any ride… it’s a serious one: Tony isn’t just doing this for the challenge (although clearly he enjoys a challenge…). He’s raising money for: **St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation** in aid of **Inspire Chorley Youth Zone**

* **Total distance:** 523 miles

* **Total climb:** 30,748 feet

* **Dates:** **10th May – 22nd May 2026**

### The route (brace yourself…)

Tony’s journey will take him:

* From **Chorley → Trans Pennine Trail → Hull**

* Up the east coast through **Bridlington, Scarborough, Whitby**

* North to **Newcastle**

* Then across via **Hadrian’s Wall Cycle Route to Carlisle**

* Through **Penrith, Shap, Lancaster, Preston**

* And finally back to **Chorley**

All while navigating hills, coastal winds, and the odd questionable navigation decision (Tony admits Stockport has beaten him before…).

### Day-by-day highlights

* **Sun 10th May:** Chorley to Glossop – 55 miles

* **Tues 12 May:** Glossop to Brotherton – 42 miles

* **Wed 13 May:** Brotherton to Hull – 48 miles

* **Thurs 14 May:** Hull to Bridlington – 34 miles

* **Fri 15 May:** Bridlington to Whitby – 40 miles

* **Sat 16 May:** Whitby to Stockton – 35 miles

* **Sun 17 May:** Stockton to Seaham – 30 miles

* **Mon 18 May:** Seaham to Newcastle – 36 miles

* **Tues 19 May:** Newcastle to Carlisle – 40 miles

* **Wed 20 May:** Carlisle to Tebay – 55 miles

* **Thurs 21 May:** Tebay to Carnforth – 35 miles

* **Fri 22 May:** Carnforth to Chorley – 55 miles

Yes… that includes a **55-mile day over Shap Summit**. At 92. Let that sink in.

### Why Tony is doing this

Tony isn’t just doing this for the challenge (although clearly he enjoys a challenge…). He’s raising money for:

**St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation** in aid of

**Inspire Chorley Youth Zone**

Tony is donating through St. James’s place foundation so that he can double (that’s right DOUBLE!) his fundraising, this way he will be helping double the amount of children enjoy all the facilities and care that Inspire can offer.

### Why this matters

Right now, families are facing real pressure with the cost of living—and Inspire are seeing demand rise by **up to 150%**.

Some children are turning up unsure where their next meal is coming from.

Inspire provides:

* A safe place to go, **7 days a week**

* Activities from **climbing to cooking, football to enterprise**

* Support for **health, wellbeing, and future opportunities**

Each visit costs **£20 per child**, but young people are only charged:

* **50p entry**

* **£1 for a hot meal**

And even that is covered if they can’t afford it.

With over **10,000 members**, Inspire is a lifeline—but it costs **£1.6 million every year** to keep the doors open.

### Tony’s story

As a grandad and great-grandad, Tony understands just how important it is to support and inspire young people.

This isn’t his first challenge either… last year he completed a 600mile ride through France with an ascent the height of Everest (29,032 feet!) and the year before a 365-mile ride from Heskin to Inverness.

But for his **92nd year**, he’s going harder!

He’ll be joined along the way by family and friends (mainly to make sure he doesn’t disappear somewhere near Stockport again…), and his granddaughter Hannah will be sharing updates throughout the journey.

### The target, We’re setting an initial fundraising target of:

**£10,000**

And every single pound will help support young people right here in Chorley.

### How you can help

If Tony can cycle 523 miles at 92…

the least we can do is support him.
