Transpennine Trail 1 🦵 in 7 days (#TPT1IN7) Coast to coast - Southport to Hornsea
If you know our dad Derek, you'll know that he has faced a lot of health challenges over the years, but he has never let this get in his way. The phrase "where there's a will there's a way" certainly comes to mind! Or as dad often says "I'm made of rubber, I'll always bounce back". So it came as no surprise, that when he had his leg amputated back in 2017, he was determined to not let that hold him back either.
Dad worked incredibly hard to learn how to walk again, with a prosthetic leg, earning him the affectionate nickname of 'Grandad Robot' from his grand kids. But he didn't stop there! He set about researching how to ride a bike with a prosthetic, and has been going on weekly bike rides, come rain or shine for the last few years now!
The Limbless Association is a wonderful charity that has really helped our dad, and many others like him, to provide advice, help and support whilst navigating this new way of life. Just when we thought we couldn't be any prouder of how our dad has dealt with this big change in his life, he is now training to cycle the Transpennine Trail, over 7 days, as the first person with an above knee amputation to do so, to raise money for this wonderful charity!
A message from Dad:
"Hi! My name is Derek. I'm an above knee amputee since 2017. I'm intending to cycle the Trans Penine Trail over 7 days on a road legal, electric assisted pedal bike, to raise funds for the LA ( Limbless Association) A voluntary organisation that helps people to cope with limb loss. They provide vital help and support for amputees, making sure no amputee need cope alone.
The Limbless Association is a beacon of hope for those navigating the challenges of limb loss. As the largest civilian limb loss charity in the UK, established in 1983, they have dedicated over 39 years to supporting amputees and their families. Their mission is to provide vital information, advice, and unwavering support through our Volunteer Visitor Network, events, resources, and helpdesk.
This year, I am so excited to share with everyone that I will be carrying out this charity cycle beginning on April 10th, 2026. This personal cycling event is not just a ride; it’s a journey towards raising awareness and funds for this worthy cause. With a target of £1,000, every contribution will help them to continue their essential work in ensuring that no amputee feels isolated or unsupported.
We invite you to join Derek in this mission. Your generous support can make a significant difference in the lives of many. Together, we can inspire hope and foster a community where everyone affected by limb loss knows they are not alone.
