You may be wondering why skydiving and why Dementia UK?
The OGs will know that I used to be fearless and very nearly signed up to the skydiving society during uni. This fearlessness meant I gave my parents had a hard time trying to "tame me" during my teenage years and also led to the agreement that, once I turned 18, I am free to do whatever I wished.
So, after my first term at uni, I came home full of excitement and told my Dad I wanted to do a skydive.
My poor Dad paced up and down the house, honouring our agreement he will no longer try to dictate what I want to do but, as a cautious man himself, he could not bear the thought that his precious eldest daughter wanted to jump out of a plane for no reason other than the thrill of it.
As an empath, I knew I wouldn't be able to enjoy it knowing it would cause him so much anxiety, so I never went ahead.
Now that I am older (and apparently, not much wiser), I can see that I am growing more cautious and are beginning to see risks everywhere. But, as you many of you know, my Dad passed away 5 years ago at the young age of 58. He worked incredibly hard all of his life and always did the right thing or went for the safe option.
One of the biggest lessons I took from losing him is that you only get one life and you have got to live it whilst you're still young(ish) and healthy enough to do stupid things like skydive.
Now, why Dementia UK?
My beautiful nan had Dementia and as a family, we experienced first-hand just how devastating the condition can be - both emotionally and physically - progressively and over many years. My two aunts worked tirelessly as her unpaid carers, giving her round the clock 24/7 care until she passed away a couple of years ago.
Dementia UK provides much needed support to families during this difficult time and as a country with an aging population, their work is more important than ever.
If you're able to make a donation, no matter how big or small, I'd be incredibly grateful. Every contribution will help Dementia UK continue supporting families like mine.
Thank you for your support.
