Story
On Easter Sunday 2017, my brother Gary heard the word no one ever wants to hear: cancer.
After being diagnosed with kidney cancer, he faced surgery with incredible strength and recovered well. The following year, cancer returned in his lungs. Throughout it all, The Royal Marsden played a huge part in Gary’s life.
Thanks to their care, Gary was able to keep living life on his terms for as long as possible. He continued working full-time, stayed positive, and remained himself, even when treatment and side effects were tough - a level of strength that still amazes me.
During lockdown, Gary underwent CyberKnife treatment for brain tumours and received care for heart problems at the same time. The compassion, skill and dedication of the doctors, nurses and staff at The Royal Marsden made an enormous difference to him — and to all of us as a family.
Gary passed away peacefully on 11th June 2025, surrounded by love.
So, to celebrate my incredible brother — I’m cycling 320 miles from our hometown of Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, to Sunderland, the home of Gary’s and our Dad’s favourite football team, over four days.
I’ll be setting off on Wednesday 20th May, Gary’s birthday, and aim to arrive at Seaburn promenade on Saturday 23rd May. The following day, we’ll be in Sunderland to watch Sunderland AFC play Chelsea FC in the final game of the season — fitting, given most of our family are Chelsea fans!
Ha’way the lads.
I hope my slightly mad adventure helps The Royal Marsden continue supporting other patients and families just as they supported our Gaz.
Thank you so much for your support, any donation big or small will be greatly appreciated.
Tracy.
