Our goal during the month of May 2023 is to have teams or individuals connected with Legacurry Presbyterian church complete sponsored walking, running, cycling or hiking challenges to total 6,600 miles !

The significance of this distance is that it represents the total journey from Legacurry church in Northern Ireland to a medical project we are financially supporting in Burkina Faso in West Africa and onto a pre-school nursery we are funding and sending a team to build in South Africa this summer.

We aim to have individuals, families and teams sign-up to complete various activities so we collectively achieve our target of 6,600 miles by the end of May and to gain sponsorship along the way.

The details on the 2 African projects we are supporting:

Fantastic Choice Pre-school Nursery, Eastern Cape, South Africa

This current pre-school is a corrugated tin shack with no water supply, toilets, playground or cooking facilities based in one of the poorest provinces in South Africa. It has around 30 pupils attend each day between the ages of 2 and 5. We are once again partnering with Impande, a charity based in South Africa which whom we have had a 17 year association, to fund and build a fit for purpose teaching facility including:

• a 2 classroom pre-school with kitchen and office areas

• Water harvesting and storage tanks

• External Pour flush toilets

• Gas cooking facilities

• Perimeter fencing to ensure safety

With this fit-for purpose facility and teacher training provided by Impande, this will allow the pre-school to become registered and subsequently receive annual government support to sustain it going forward.

Bethanie Health Centre, Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso

Bethanie Health Centre is located in one of the poorest areas of Burkina Faso, on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou. The health centre provides maternity and other primary healthcare services to a large population with very limited access to other state run services.

This project marks the twentieth anniversary of the first Legacurry team going to Burkina Faso. Its aim is to help in the development of the health centre so that it is recognized officially by the government as eligible for public funding. When this funding is in place, its services can be provided free at the point of need to mothers, babies and children under 5 years of age.

The main elements of the project include:

• Completion of solar / battery power installation to power equipment and water pumps

• Provision of additional lab equipment, including a haematology cellular analyser

• Financing for 2 years to enable the health centre to become part of the government system in future
