Story
My name is Umit & I will be running the Barcelona Marathon on the 10th March 2024 to help raise funds for ‘Multiple Sclerosis Society’ with the hope that over time they can research, develop & put into society effective treatment procedures & technological equipment to support individuals suffering from MS to help minimise the effects this illness has on their daily life.
Years ago my Mom got diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) at a relatively young age. For those of you who know this illness well will know just how much it affects the individual, for those of you who may not be as aware of the illness then here is a brief description:
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a condition that affects your brain and spinal cord. In MS, the coating that protects your nerves (myelin) is damaged. This causes a range of symptoms like blurred vision and problems with how we move think and feel. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments and specialists can help you to manage the condition and its symptoms.
As mentioned above, this illness is a progressive illness meaning once diagnosed, the health of that person will only deteriorate. The only thing you can do with this illness is just try to manage it & slow the decline down through daily/hourly treatment. In the past few years, myself, family members & friends of my mom have saw her health decline in many aspects. There are ‘good’ & ‘bad’ days for my Mom (relative to the illness), but recently, the bad days are certainly outweighing the good.
Not only have we all seen first hand of how this illness can affect an individual, we have also become aware of other individuals or families who have/had MS & share that compassion with them. As a result of this, I want to try & play my small part to help MS Society be able to provide the many individuals diagnosed with MS the best & most effective support system & medical opportunities possible to help minimise the effect this illness has on their daily lives & also their support system around them.
From myself, family members & friends to everyone/anyone who knows of anyone with this illness -Thank you for taking the time to read this (apologies if the grammar was poor!), thank you in advance & donations to this fundraising page will be hugely appreciated.
