It is frighteningly easy to ignore someone on the street.
We look at our phones. We cross the road. We tell ourselves that somebody else will help.
But nobody should feel invisible.
I’m raising money for Under One Sky, a volunteer-powered charity supporting people experiencing homelessness in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and London.
Our volunteers take to the streets through regular Skywalks, offering food, hot drinks, clothing and other essentials. But the most important thing they offer cannot be put in a bag: genuine human connection.
They stop. They listen. They learn somebody’s name. They remind people who are too often ignored that they still matter.
Since 2020, Under One Sky has made more than 200,000 meaningful connections with people affected by homelessness. Every week, its teams connect with around 600 homeless friends.
And the work does not end with immediate relief.
Under One Sky is launching the Lighthouse, a trauma-informed programme created to help people move beyond day-to-day survival. Built on trust and consistent relationships, it offers personalised support towards stability, confidence, purpose and independence.
Because homelessness is not solved by handing someone a sandwich and walking away. People need somewhere safe to go, but they also need relationships, practical support and someone who refuses to give up on them.
The street can take your warmth, your safety and your sleep. Being ignored can take something even more brutal: the feeling that you still belong to the human race.
