Story
In October 2014, former University of Portsmouth Men's Football Club member Rob Harris at the age of 21 was diagnosed with testicular cancer and sadly passed away in November 2014. In February 2015, the family and friends of Rob, alongside the University of Portsmouth, hosted a memorial football match in his honour aiming to raise money for Young Lives vs Cancer – who support young adults and children suffering with cancer.
Today, 12 children and young people in the UK will hear the shocking news that they have cancer. Treatment normally starts immediately, and is often given many miles from home and can last for up to three years. Being diagnosed with cancer is a frightening experience and the emotional, practical and financial implications of treatment are intensely challenging for the whole family.
Young Lives vs Cancer is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people, and their families. They provide clinical, practical, financial and emotional support to help them cope with cancer and get the most out of life. They are there from diagnosis onwards, and aim to help the whole family deal with the impact of cancer, treatment, life after treatment and, in some cases, bereavement.
In previous years, over £8,500 has been raised for Robs chosen charity and this year we are looking to add to that.
This year on May the 3rd, we are excited to be holding the event once again, whereby our current club members will play against the clubs previous members.
This event will take place at HMS Temeraire, Portsmouth; Burnaby Rd, Portsmouth PO1 2HB. The match will kick off at 6pm. Spectator tickets are available through our Instagram @uop_football.
Any donations however large or small would be hugely appreciated!
Thank you,
UPFC
