Story
In mid November 2024 I was diagnosed with Alveola Rhabdomyoscarcoma an aggressive, advanced form of cancer. At that time I was given a choice, to be made comfortable with an approximate prognosis of 9 months, or powerful treatment in attempt to double my life expectancy. I chose to have treatment and I was lucky enough to be put on a research trial aimed at proving that a positive attitude and healthy lifestyle improves outcomes. It worked! A recent scan shows I have responded really well to treatment and as a result have a much improved prognosis.
I have only been able to cope with my prognosis and treatment with the help of my wonderful family and friends who have kept me motivated through the ups and downs. Together with the incredible support of the Macmillan charity. Jenny, my Macmillan Support Worker has helped me in so many ways, far too many to list here. I have also seen how this charity helps so many people in so many different ways, hence my desire to help them.
Before my diagnosis I loved running and helping others to find the joy of running with Tavistock Athletic Club (TAC). I am no longer able to run but I can walk with a walking aid and my amazing friends at this club are supporting me with my challenge. On the 16th August, 9 months after my devastating prognosis instead of quietly slipping away I will take part in the Tavy 5 organised by TAC. I will be at the back with my walking aid and a few friends flying the flag for Macmillan. I have competed in this monthly race many times over the years. Last year I was struggling to beat the 30 minutes target. On the 16th August I will be striving to finish it in around an hour which is a big challenge for me now.
In addition to supporting Macmillan I want to raise awareness that life with cancer can be very good, if you keep motivated and accept support. I feel very lucky to be alive and I am genuinely enjoying every day including my training for this challenge.
Thanks for supporting my fundraising. Macmillan gives people with cancer everything they’ve got. If you’re diagnosed, your worries are Macmillan’s worries. Macmillan’s doing whatever it takes. But without your help, Macmillan can’t support everyone who needs them.
