Story
In 2018, when Dharura first began working with Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital (NTRH), triage took place outdoors — in a tent set up between the Outpatient Department and the Emergency Department. Patients arrived anxious, unwell, and often vulnerable. Yet nurses had no standardised triage tool, limited training in formal triage principles, and inconsistent documentation systems.
Without a structured process, it was difficult to identify the sickest patients quickly. High-risk cases could be missed. Patient safety depended largely on individual experience rather than a reliable system.
Together, we began to change that.
Through partnership and practical training, Dharura supported Kenyan clinical staff to introduce a structured triage tool aligned with national emergency care recommendations. Step by step, documentation improved. Staff confidence grew. Clinical decision-making became safer and more consistent.
Today, the difference is measurable. Data from 2025 show near-complete documentation of presenting complaints, clinical history, and risk factors. Triage assessments are standardised. High-risk patients are identified more reliably. Patient safety and clinical governance have strengthened significantly.
But sustainable change requires local leadership.
That is why we are now seeking to develop a dedicated “Triage Champion” at NTRH — a local clinical leader who can drive continuous improvement, mentor colleagues, and embed best practice long into the future.
The funds we raise will enable one Kenyan clinician to:
Travel to the UK for specialised triage training
Observe real-time emergency triage at Bristol Royal Infirmary
Learn about patient flow, safety systems, and clinical governance in a different healthcare setting
This is not simply a study visit. It is an investment in sustainable, locally led change.
By equipping one committed clinician with advanced skills and first-hand experience, we empower them to return to Nanyuki as a leader — strengthening emergency care systems that will benefit thousands of patients every year.
Your support will directly contribute to safer emergency care, stronger local capacity, and better outcomes for families in Nanyuki, Kenya.
Together, we can ensure that the most vulnerable patients are seen quickly, treated safely, and given the care they deserve.
