Story
Hiya!
Armenia is currently going through a humanitarian crisis, with military action at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border taking hundreds of lives. Just weeks ago Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced his intention to recognise the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, formerly treated mostly as a devolved part of Armenia, as part of Azerbaijan, a move that close to 0% of the population supports, and one that will put the nearly 100% ethnically Armenian population of almost 150,000 in danger. The blockade of a major road has left some 120,000 Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh without access to essentials like food, water, and medical supplies.
It would take a very long time to explain the entire history of the border disputes that have led to the current issues Armenia is facing, and I encourage anybody who has the time to read more about it, but in summary extensive military conflict has lead to the unnecessary suffering of thousands of civilians, and it’s time the rest of the world began to take notice. Volunteers are trying their best to help, but such assistance requires funding, and this is where you and I come in.
I love bikes, I love any sort of leg workout, I love a competition, and I love Armenology. I figured I’d combine both my love of cardio and my love for the subject I’m dedicating my life to studying, and that’s why I’ll be doing the St Neots Triathlon this year to raise money for the Armenian General Benevolent Union, a charity that aims to provide support to Armenians in every capacity, whether it be through education programs, cultural preservation, or humanitarian aid. I’ll be doing the Super Sprint, swimming 400m, cycling 8km, and running 2.5km, and I can’t wait!
Thank you for your time, and I hope you consider donating to the cause.
