Story
On 13th August 2015, my sister Lizzy died from bowel cancer.
She would kill me for saying she was "brave" or that she "fought" or "battled with" cancer. But she did (and still does) inspire me with the approach and mindset she adopted throughout the countless major operations and rounds of chemotherapy she endured during her illness.
Lizzy's words were "I can't change where I am, but I can change how I get there! Laughter and silliness, really are the best medicine!"
Lizzy launched the "Random Acts of Silliness" campaign through which she which aimed to fight against the sympathetic head tilt, and to challenge people to always look for the funny bits in life. She enlisted celebs such as Sarah Millican, Dawn French and Alan Carr, and raised £15,000 for a Hospice called LOROS.
LOROS is also where Lizzy later died. It truly is a special place. When she got the call to say there was a bed available for her so she to be transferred there from hospital, I remember her turning to me and saying that she knew it would all be okay now. And it was. I cannot put into words what this hospice did for Lizzy, and for us, in her final days.
But LOROS are experiencing severe financial difficulties and recently announced that they are reducing their services. Amongst other things they are reducing the number of beds on their inpatient ward. That's less people who can get the exceptional care and support Lizzy and us benefited from.
For us, Life has moved on, without Lizzy in it. I can't pretend I don't miss her like crazy, and that it doesn't still break my heart that she is gone, but I can (and try to) approach life with a "can do" attitude, and with a sprinkling of fun, because of her.
To mark the 10 years since her death, I want to do something positive in her memory. And so on 6th September, I am doing a 100 mile bike ride around Leicestershire, to raise money for LOROS.
Assuming my legs are still in one piece, I will then do a final 10 miles to finish the ride in Wilbarston, the village where Lizzy lived with her wife and little boy, and where (half!) of her ashes are scattered.
If you would like to support LOROS, and help me to ensure Lizzy's legacy lives on, please donate what you can.
Many thanks, and don't forget to SMILE xxx
