Supporting The Mermaid Centre

The Mermaid Centre is a charity very close to my heart. They looked after me through three long years of treatment— all during Covid, when I wasn’t allowed family or friends with me. The nurses were truly incredible, and I’ll forever be grateful for their care, kindness, and strength when I needed it most.

My small business, Get Out of Anything Cards, was born out of that time. After my own cancer diagnosis, I designed my very first card — The Cancer Card. From there it’s grown into a collection of around 100 cheeky little keepsake cards.

They’re made of gold aluminium, credit card–sized, and designed to slip inside a greeting card or keep in your wallet. The idea is simple: to give people a smile, even in tough times. They’re never about making light of an illness, but about bringing a spark of humour and strength when it’s most needed. Dark humour helped me through everything, and I know so many others feel the same.

That’s why I’m so proud to now donate 10% of all Cancer Card and badge sales to The Mermaid Centre, to help them continue their amazing work.

Every purchase not only gives someone a little light in darker times but also helps support an incredible team that changes lives every day.

Supporting The Mermaid Centre Fund, part of Royal Cornwall Hospitals Charity will help us to provide additional equipment, enhance our environments and provide additional training for our staff all to provide the very best care that we can for our patients.

The Mermaid Centre is home to the Cornwall Breast Screening Programme (NHS BSP) and the Oncoplastic Breast Unit. We also monitor patients with a family history that maybe at higher risk of developing breast cancer.

It was one of the first units in the UK to have a fully digitalised mammography screening service. Our commitment to providing the highest possible quality screening programme was judged the best screening programme in the region in 2008, and among the best in the UK by the South West Screening Quality Assurance team. In October 2011, the Mermaid Centre was one of the first breast units in the country to be endorsed by Breakthrough Breast Cancer for our Service Pledge commitment to the patients of Cornwall.
