A few years ago, my family had to face one of the most painful decisions of our lives — arranging for my mum to move into a care home. She had been diagnosed with dementia in her early 60s, and the illness progressed so quickly. My dad did everything he possibly could to care for her at home, but eventually the demands of her illness became too much.
I had already been working at Queen Elizabeth Park Care Home in Guildford for many years, so I knew first-hand the love, compassion and dedication that goes into caring for residents. Everyone is treated as if they are part of one big family. We knew this was the place my mum needed to be, where her needs could be fully met, and where she would be cared for with kindness and dignity as her dementia progressed.
Watching someone you love decline because of this cruel disease is devastating. But we found comfort in knowing that Mum was in safe hands, surrounded by superheroes who treated her with gentleness and love, even when she could no longer recognise us. That knowledge made an unbearable situation just a little bit easier to cope with.
This first-hand experience showed me how precious good care is — not only for those who are unwell, but also for the families who are walking alongside them. Having support, reassurance and kindness at such a difficult time truly makes all the difference.
That is why I want to raise money for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice in Farnham. They are the only hospice in West Surrey and part of North East Hampshire providing specialist end-of-life hospice care for adults and vital support for their families. Their work is life-changing, offering comfort, dignity and compassion when it is needed most.
On 14th May 2026, I will be taking on a challenge that feels both exciting and daunting: I’ll be travelling with some of our amazing Queen Elizabeth Park residents and team to the Isle of Wight airfield, where I’ll take to the skies and complete a Wing Walk — strapped to the top of a plane! It’s a huge leap outside of my comfort zone, but I wanted to do something that reflects the courage and strength shown every single day by the families cared for at the hospice.
I know that no stunt can compare to the struggles faced by those living with a terminal illness or their loved ones, but this is my way of giving back — of saying thank you to the superheroes at Phyllis Tuckwell who bring light, comfort and dignity to so many in their final days.
If you are able to donate, no matter how big or small, it will go directly towards helping this incredible hospice continue its vital work.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for anything you can give.
Vicky
