Here’s one thing you probably don’t known about me - I have a wonky spine. It’s a 30+ degree curvature that means that if not managed properly, the pain can be debilitating. Part of managing it is regular exercise so that all of my muscles, not just my back and core, can support my spine. However, another twist (get it?) in the story is that because my spine is curved, my ribcage is a bit squished together and my lung capacity reduced, making cardio particularly tricky.
I’m going to be building my first show garden at the end of June at Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival with my friends Kate, Gina and some of my other LCGD buddies who are part of the 'For the love of Lamiaceae border' and I’m a bit panicked.
Not because of the garden, but about my back - how am I going to cope with four full days of build, seven days of standing and a further two of breakdown? It’s a lot for my curvy spine to take, particularly because I've been neglecting my fitness over the past few months.
Therefore, I’m committing to getting fit and strong ahead of the event. I’m going to follow the couch to 5k program, walk at least 5k steps a day and a minimum of two strength focussed workouts a week with a deadline of 23rd June of achieving the 5k, shaving two weeks off the program. And to make me further accountable, I'm raising money for Scoliosis Support and Research so that further help can be given to others who live with scoliosis.
I'm fully aware that 5k is what other people run for fun, but everyone is different and it will be a challenge for me, alongside running my business, preparing for the show and being Mum of two primary-school age children.
