Story
Almost a year ago to the date, I was sat in the weekend emergency clinic with my little sister, Helen. She had had a sinus infection for about a month, we thought after a couple of weeks it had got better, but then it got worse. So we went to the hospital to get it checked out.
Three days later she was admitted into the high dependency unit at the Queen Elizabeth hospital, diagnosed with Vasculitis. Vasculitis is a rare disease of the small blood vessels. The blood vessels in her throat and lungs had been bursting, filling her lungs with blood.
Helen being Helen, has made a remarkable recovery. After a couple of months she was out of hospital and on the road to getting better. One year later, she's back to work, has taken up gardening, and is able to live an almost normal life.
It was during this time she was introduced to the Lauren Currie Twilight Foundation - a charity raising awareness of vasculitis, funding research and providing incredible support to people living with vasculitis. They have provided her and our family with information for living with the condition, and organised weekend retreats so that people like Helen can share stories and be part of a support network.
While I've been sat there feeling utterly useless, I have realised that the most useful thing I can do is help raise awareness and raise funds so that LCTF can keep up the fantastic work.
I will be walking the West Highland Way, a seven day trek from Glasgow to Fort William.
Please support me if you can!
