Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Lobular Breast Cancer is a distinct type of breast cancer that has different characteristics and growth from the more common Ductal Breast Cancer. It makes up 15% of all breast cancers but unlike Ductal Cancer it grows in a line, like tree branches, or single cells; no clear lump, making it harder to see on mammograms and Ultrasounds.
I had both Invasive Lobular (ILC) and Invasive Ductal Cancer (IDC) in 1 breast - luckily ! Both the mammogram and the ultrasound of the breast and lymph nodes were completely clear, yet the Lobular tumor was huge and the size of a lemon, at approx. 8cm x 7cm! The 2cm Ductal tumor was seen on scans so biopsies were taken which showed Lobular, and then an MRI to identify the size of it and spread which determined the treatment. Having both cancers probably saved my life. I had a mammogram 3 years previously as something didn't feel right. I was given the all-clear and sent on my way. When I was finally diagnosed in Oct 2021 the cancer was the largest category in size (over 5cm), Stage 3, and by then had spread to my lymph nodes.
The problem is that Lobular needs different scans to find it and specific tailored treatment not available today. Lobular doesn't respond to chemo very well (mine was still 5cm after 16 rounds of chemo), but it is treated in exactly the same way as Ductal cancer. This means worse prognosis, and sadly many women are already at Stage 4 metastatic cancer at the time of diagnosis when the cancer is so large that it is identified.
SO - on 12th November, I took a gentle little stroll over some red hot burning embers to inspire some donations to this little known and under-funded cause. Any amount, however small, is very much appreciated. However small - don't be embarrassed.
Thank-you so much for reading all of this. Pics of proof are added and a video upon request !
