Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

In order to raise money to pursue Hospice Africa France's work in Africa we are walking 100km in 5 days along and around the Nantes-Brest Canal in Brittany. We will be staying on a canal boat which will follow us as we progress along the waterway.

This year the funds will go towards Hospice Africa France’s work in Bénin where local health workers, trained over the years by HAF, are on the verge of establishing a centre of excellence in Palliative care in Francophone Africa.

The importance of his work was brought home to us when we received a letter from Dr Mourmouni Ayouba, a Benin doctor who had just finished our palliative care course. He describes how that course has increased his understanding of the care of those at the end of life and the need for compassion and awareness of the whole person. He describes how his own brother was diagnosed with liver cancer and the difficult questions he was forced to confront. Caring for his brother during the final weks of his life was made more bearable thanks to Dr Ayouba's Hospice training. He ends his letter with a profound observation- the best compassion for a patient is competence.

It is this gift that our funding helps to provide.
