Norfolk’s churches are absolute gems and Betjeman was right - the skyline would not be the same without them!

It is all too easy to take these architectural delights for granted. Each one is a veritable treasure trove with its own unique story, revealing so much to us about our social, economic and artistic history.

The upkeep of our wonderful buildings is mainly down to the local parishes and fundraising by local people - my own parish church (St Peter's, Billingford) has benefitted greatly in recent years from Norfolk Churches Trust and the generosity of others. Indeed, without that support St Peter's might well have closed.

It would be wonderful if the churches in the county, which form such an important part of our heritage, could be kept open for everyone to enjoy. That is why I am taking part Norfolk Churches Trust's annual Bike Ride, Walk and Drive on 12 September 2026 - it is a really great way to raise awareness and funds and also have a brilliant day out. I'm planning to visit around 14 rural churches - a modest number when compared to many participants but I will be pleased to achieve it!
