Story
On 22nd August 2026, I will be taking part in the SHA Zipline 2026 challenge to raise both money and awareness for Huntington's disease.
Often described as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Motor neuron disease all rolled into one, HD is a devastating hereditary condition which gives children of an affected parent a 50/50 chance of inheriting the faulty gene that causes this neurodegenerative disease. Referred to as the "cruellest" and "most heart-breaking" illness due to its profound impact on an individual's life.
Since I was a teenager, I have known that Huntington's disease was a part of my family. I have lived with the knowledge that I have a 50/50 chance of having inherited the faulty gene that causes it. I have seen first-hand the deterioration in my gran and more profoundly with my dad; it has robbed my siblings and I of the dad we once knew and our children of a Di (grandad) that they will never know💔
Losing someone you love bit by bit is truly harrowing. HD takes its toll on not just those affected but also those who care for them. It can be emotionally, mentally, and physically draining. Sometimes to the detriment of your own health and wellbeing 😔
I try to do my bit by raising awareness and vital funds to help those and their families impacted by Huntington’s disease, and more recently, have enrolled in one of the research programmes in the hope of making a difference🤞
The Scottish Huntington's Association provide invaluable support to those living with HD and their families. Please consider donating whatever you can to support me in a cause which is very close to my heart.
