Vivace Voices is a Tilehurst-based choir for female voices. We enjoy singing a very eclectic range of music, and every term we perform a concert at which we raise money for charity.
This term our chosen charity is Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. This inspirational charity works to rebuild connection, companionship, and confidence through trained hearing dogs, and offers practical and emotional support services, transforming the lives of people who are deaf or have hearing loss.
Hearing dogs are highly trained to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the smoke alarm, alarm clocks and even intruder alarms and baby monitors. They also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support, which is really important as many deaf people can feel lonely and isolated.
It costs £26,000 to fully train a hearing dog, so please support Vivace Voices to raise funds to train more dogs and support those with hearing loss. Any donation, however large or small, will really help.
Meet Nadine and Elvis 🐾
For deaf people like Nadine, a hearing dog can provide so much more than practical support. They can bring confidence, independence, companionship and a greater sense of safety.

Health and safety professional Nadine first noticed problems with her hearing in her early twenties. As her hearing deteriorated, everyday situations began to highlight just how vulnerable deafness could leave her.
On one occasion, Nadine’s then-husband collapsed and knocked himself unconscious in the bathroom. Unable to hear what had happened, Nadine only became aware when he regained consciousness and managed to get close enough to alert her.
Another frightening experience happened while Nadine slept through a fire alarm whilst staying in a hotel. Nadine had not heard it, and no one had come to alert her.
Combined with the worrying thought that she might not hear her son crying during the night, these experiences prompted Nadine to contact Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and apply for a dog.

Hearing Dogs supports deaf people throughout their journey, carefully matching them with a dog suited to their individual needs, lifestyle and circumstances.
For Nadine, that perfect partner was Elvis.
“The most amazing companion I could ever have.” saysNadine.
Elvis accompanies Nadine wherever she goes and has transformed both her confidence and independence.
“Just having him with me has given me the confidence to go places and do things I would previously have avoided on my own. I feel more able to speak to people with him being there and I no longer feel embarrassed to ask them to repeat themselves.”

Elvis is trained to alert Nadine to important sounds around the home, including her alarm clock, doorbell, telephone, cooker timers and safety alarms.
His support extends into Nadine’s professional life too. Having worked across offices and construction sites, Nadine has Elvis beside her not only to alert her to sounds, but also as a visible indication to others that she is deaf. This can make communication easier and help those around her better understand her needs.
And Elvis has brought something else too: joy.
“No matter how busy we are, or what tasks we are pushing through, Elvis lifts everyone’s spirits and enhances every environment.”
Perhaps most importantly, Elvis has given Nadine greater confidence to live life on her own terms.
“With Elvis by my side, I’m never alone and I feel safe.”
