My name is Viv Tolley and I am passionately dedicated to amplifying awareness and fundraising efforts in aid of Myeloma UK. My very good friend Mervyn (Merv) Powis was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma on 5th February 2021, a week before his 63rd birthday. In 2025. he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma which on top of Multiple Myeloma had already taken its toll on his body including bone pain, Infections, medication side effects and never felling well. After treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma Merv is now in remission but continues his battle against Myeloma.
I will be embarking on a self-supported round trip starting on May 22nd 2026 covering much of the 'Badlands of Spain' . The route of approximately 800km with over 10,000 meters of elevation will be starting from Torrox Costa and cycling to Granada, through the Cave Houses of Guadix, the Gorafe Desert, Calar Alto Observatory, the Tabernas Desert, San Diego Mining Village, Cabo de Gata and the Euro Velo coastal route 8 on the return. The route will be off-road as much as possible using gravel tracks, forest trails and Via Verdes (old railway lines). I will be sharing my journey using social media, providing daily updates, photos and videos along the way.
Message from Merv:
Support from family and friends got me through the tough times. Viv’s 'Badlands' unsupported epic ride will be pushing him and his body to the limit and beyond, the distance, terrain and heat he will need the determination and mindset that is needed to fight cancer.
It would be great if you are able to help Viv in getting to his £1000 goal for Myeloma UK as every little helps.
Viv to me is truly is an inspiration taking on challenges in support of cancer.
Thank you
Mervyn with a smile
Your help and support with my challenge will be greatly appreciated by not just myself, Merv, Myeloma UK, but by everyone who is or has been impacted on by Myeloma.
