Story

Nothing can prepare you for a cancer diagnosis. When I got the news at the start of 2023, my first reaction was of shock, then denial. Then I ran the gamut of emotions and even tried to negotiate my way out of major surgery! Silly, I know, but when you feel fairly fit and strong and something like that comes out of left field, rational thinking goes out of the window. Thankfully, a chat with my Macmillan nurse, Louise, allayed my fears, and my surgery was over and done within two weeks. Since then, Louise and the Macmillan team have been there for me, when I had questions about my ongoing treatment, other symptoms to look out for, and other tests I still needed......

Over the last two years so many more friends have been newly diagnosed. Others are no longer in remission. And I lost yet another friend to cancer just before Christmas.

Most recently, my bestie, Carrol, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. She is going through chemo now, and like many has lost her hair. I half jokingly offered her mine; of course it would not suit her - we are like chalk and cheese! But there will be other people who would suit my "salt 'n' pepper" locks.....

In July 2025, I will be taking on my 6th Macmillan Mighty Hike and my second full marathon to help raise money for people living with cancer. But as an extra boost to my fundraising (and in solidarity with Carrol and so many others), on 24th April, I will also "brave the shave"! And the hair will be donated to a group who make wigs for people going through chemotherapy or who have lost their hair due other medical conditions.

For each Mighty Hike I take part in, I pledge to raise at least £250. This can pay for a Macmillan Nurse for one day so people living with cancer and their families can access essential medical, practical and emotional support. I would love to blow that target out of the water - your help in achieving that would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Vivienne xx
