Volunteers' 5k for Blind Veterans UK

Supporter of Blind Veterans UK is raising money for Blind Veterans UK

5k for Blind Veterans UK · 18 June 2025

We believe every blind veteran should be able to lead the life they choose. At Blind Veterans UK we’re one, transformational team. We provide rehabilitation, training, practical advice and emotional support. Together we can help rebuild lives.

Story

The Challenge:

On Wednesday 18th June a group of Blind Veterans UK volunteers will be taking part in a 5km walk around Bute Park.

This challenge has been organised by Volunteer Co-ordinator for South Wales Olga, in order to raise awareness of the invaluable support and integral part volunteers play in helping blind veterans rebuild their lives after sight loss and to provide opportunity to come together during Armed Forces Month, a campaign that calls on supporters of Blind Veterans UK to organise events and activities to celebrate and commemorate key dates during the month of June.

“Our volunteers make a life-changing difference without even realising it. Whenever I visit one of our veterans who receives help from a volunteer, I always hear how deeply appreciated that support is. Their dedication and selflessness truly make a difference, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they do, which is why I wanted to organise an event to bring them together and to celebrate them.” (Olga, Volunteer Co-ordinator)

The Goal:

In addition to providing an opportunity to come together and celebrate their contribution, Olga and her volunteer team are hoping to raise vital awareness of the support provided by Blind Veterans UK by chatting to those they meet on their way should a veteran they know be in need of support.

Those volunteers taking part also hope to raise £500 – the equivalent of the cost of recruiting and training a volunteer – in order to ensure both veterans and volunteers alike can benefit from Blind Veterans UK’s volunteering programme.

“Volunteering means a lot to me; it gives me a sense of achievement. If you have a heart of compassion and a spirit of empathy, volunteering for Blind Veterans UK can be a satisfying and rewarding experience. Volunteering enriches the lives of the blind veterans but also my own.” (Phil, Volunteer)
