Abby’s back story
We decided to complete this fundraising event in support for our friend Abby, who was recently diagnosed with relapsing and remitting MS in November 2024, at the age of 25. Abby was seen originally by a neuro ophthalmologist after having optic neuritis and was given a vague diagnosis of MS, from there on Abby went on to have MRI scans, a lumbar puncture, nerve conductive studies and blood tests. Through this Abby was told she has 5 lesions on her brain and has OCB markers in her blood (which is present in 95% of people with MS), as well as showing both radiological and clinical signs of MS.
This diagnosis came as a shock to Abby and everyone around her. Unfortunately, Abby has since started to suffer additional symptoms, leading her to be in hospital requiring specialist neurologists to find the correct treatment for her current symptoms. Abby uses her platform on TikTok - nurseneurodiverse to show her journey with MS and to validate neurodiverse female experiences, promoting wider knowledge and advocacy.
Abby currently works on an elderly medical ward as a nurse, whilst also completing her MSc in nursing, as well as being the chair of her university's neurodivergent society. Abby is funny, creative, smart, compassionate about animals, food and will do everything in her power to help educate, promote and uplift others. We hope by doing this we will be able to help her spread her platform further and help her receive the care and treatment she deserves as well as everyone else suffering with this medical condition.
What is MS (Multiple Sclerosis)?
MS is a condition that affects the central nervous system, causing a wide range of potential symptoms. The exact cause of MS is unknown, but we do know that something triggers the immune system to attack the brain and spinal cord. These attacks result in loss of myelin (the protective layer insulating wire-like nerve fibres) and axons (the wire-like nerve fibres), which disrupts signals to and from the brain. This disruption of signal conduction causes unpredictable symptoms which vary from person to person. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for life, but treatments can help to mitigate the condition and its symptoms.
Quote from Lemony Snickett
“At times the world may seem an unfriendly and sinister place but believe that there is much more good in it then bad. All you have to do is look hard enough. And what might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may in fact be the first steps of a journey.”
