Story
Walking St Cuthbert's Way, 100km, 15th-19th April 2026
This is a pilgrimage for our great friend Jamie Tweedie, who died from a brain tumour last year. We are walking in his memory to reflect on all he gave us, and to give as much as we can to brain tumour research.
Jamie was the kindest, funniest, humblest father, husband, son, brother and friend you could meet. In July 2023, he was diagnosed with a Grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma. Despite two operations and many months of gruelling treatment, his tumour progressed at heartbreaking speed. He lost his fight on 9th May 2025, shortly before his 51st birthday.
Statistics for cancerous brain tumours are grim – half of those diagnosed do not survive for more than a year.
Brain tumours kill more children and young adults in the UK than any other cancer.
Just 1% of our national spend on cancer research has been allocated to brain tumours since records began.
The Scottish Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence is dedicated to advancing new treatments for tumours like Jamie’s. They work tirelessly to gain a deeper understanding of brain tumours, to get closer to a cure. Jamie’s tumour is helping the Centre to further their research, but funding is desperately needed. We’d be so grateful for anything you can give to help Jamie’s legacy bring hope to other families.
There will be bagpipes, blisters and monkish meals as we walk St Cuthbert’s Way!
This 100-km route runs from Jamie’s local town of Melrose to Holy Island in Northumberland. It traces St Cuthbert’s ancient pilgrimage path along the River Tweed, through the Scottish Borders to the Northumbrian coast. We plan to do the mainland walk in 4 days, crossing to the island at low tide on day 5.
We may have spotted a few similarities between Jamie and St Cuthbert. For a start, they were both known for having time for everyone - and a great gift for spreading their word! Like Jamie, St Cuthbert was a lover of nature and was a shepherd, horseman and soldier before becoming a monk.
Two legends. One walk. LOTS of stories.
Please donate and join us if you can!
