Story
This April, I will be raising money for Prisoners of Conscience and helping to #UnlockFreedom for those who risk their lives to defend our basic rights and freedoms.
Across the world, tens of thousands of people are being persecuted, silenced, tortured or forced to flee their country, all because they are standing up for what’s right.
People shouldn’t have to risk their lives to protect human rights. They shouldn’t be forced into poverty or torn apart from their families and children.
Every week in April 2025, I will walk across the Tay Road Bridge in Dundee as a symbolic act of solidarity with Human Rights Defenders forced to flee persecution. This journey mirrors my own experience of crossing the Beitbridge into South Africa, seeking safety from persecution in Zimbabwe.
Every step that I take represents the perilous journeys made by those fleeing persecution - journalists, lawyers, activists and environmental defenders - who have no choice but to seek safety elsewhere. Many remain imprisoned or in danger simply for speaking truth to power. Prisoners of Conscience provides emergency grants, legal aid, and rehabilitation support to those facing repression worldwide.
