Story
Watermore Primary School is raising funds to install air conditioning because, during periods of extreme heat, parts of our school become incredibly difficult for children and staff to work in safely and comfortably.
Our classrooms and shared spaces were not designed for the increasingly high temperatures we are now experiencing. On the hottest days, the heat can become overwhelming, affecting children’s concentration, well-being and ability to learn. It is particularly challenging for our youngest pupils, children with additional needs and those with medical conditions who can be more vulnerable to excessive temperatures.
This is not about luxury. It is about creating a safe, suitable and resilient learning environment for every child.
Recent extreme weather has already caused significant disruption and has, on occasion, left us with no alternative but to close the school. We know how difficult this is for families, particularly those who need to arrange emergency childcare or take time away from work. By installing energy-efficient air-conditioning units, we hope to prevent future closures and ensure that our children can continue learning safely throughout the year.
The benefits will also reach beyond the school day. Watermore is regularly used by local community groups for Karate, Tang Soo Do, Taekwondo and sports holiday-club activities. These physically demanding sessions become much harder to deliver safely when indoor temperatures are extremely high. Improving the building will therefore support not only our pupils and staff, but also children, families and community organisations across the local area.
The full project is expected to cost around £45,000. The school will contribute from its own limited funds, our PTA will be fundraising, and we are seeking support from the parish council, grant providers, local businesses and the wider community.
Every donation, no matter how large or small, will move us closer to creating a cooler, safer and more comfortable school for everyone who uses it.
By supporting this appeal, you will be making a lasting difference to hundreds of children now and for many years to come.
