Story
The SS Great Britain Trust is one of Bristol’s most beloved museums, housing the iconic and world changing ship the SS Great Britain.
They have challenged a team of brave volunteers at WBD to Go Aloft! and raise crucial funds to help them open a new museum which will put Bristol’s communities at the heart of the story.
Through working with community researchers from across the city, the SS Great Britain Trust is taking everything out of the current Dockyard Museum and completely starting again to create space that reflect the values of our city. The new museum will take visitors on a journey across the world following voyagers as they created new lives around the world, the sailors and crew who worked on the ship and the engineers who kept it running as they circled the globe 32 times!
The brave volunteers who will be ascending the rigging of the SS Great Britain on the 16th April are:
Jess
Maddy
Charlie
Rita
George
Olivia
Tom P
Edward
Niall
Tom C
Oliver
Tom F
Rebecca
Alexander
Harvey
Edixon
NOTE: The team will be climbing SS Great Britain on 16th April 2026 (rather than in June as it says in the event details - this is filled in automatically and can't be changed).
Our challenge is to climb 80 ft high up the rigging of the ship and traverse 9m along the main yard, following the footsteps of Victorian sailors who made the brave journey to travel the world taking voyagers for new beginnings.
Any support is much appreciated, please do donate generously to play your part in supporting the new museum, and supporting us in this fun challenge!
