I haven't completed an event to raise money in many years, but after speaking with a special running friend last weekend, who has been recently diagnosed with MND, I felt this was a very worthy cause to be raising money for.

Starting at 5am (UK time) on Saturday 28th September, I will be completing Spartathlon, over in Greece.

SPARTATHLON is a historic ultra-distance 246km foot race that takes place in September of every year in Greece. It is one of the most difficult and satisfying ultra-distance races in the world because of its unique history and background.https://www.spartathlon.gr/en/home/

The Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians.

According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides arrived in Sparta the day after his departure from Athens. The race cut off is a tight 36hours.

I will have my amazing brother-in-law Rusty crewing for me, but I will be leaving the rest of my family at home. The current temperature is forecast as 32-33 degrees.

My school have been very generous in allowing me the time to complete this event, and I will be sharing the journey with my colleagues and students when I get home.

When the miles get tough, I will be grateful to have my mobility and strength to continue on, and thinking of those who have had theirs snatched from them by MND.
