The Athens Marathon, also known as the Athens Classic Marathon or "The Authentic", is a historic annual road race held in Athens, Greece, typically in early November. It traces its roots to the legendary run of Pheidippides, a Greek soldier who is said to have run from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens in 490 BC to announce victory over the Persians
The modern race was first held in 1972 and follows a 42.195 km (26.2 miles) course from the town of Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, the site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. It has grown into a major international event, attracting elite athletes and thousands of amateur runners from around the world
