Carmen's fundraiser for Black Country Women's Aid

Carmen Watson is raising money for Black Country Women's Aid
Black Country Women’s Aid is an independent charity which has supported survivors of abuse and exploitation in the West Midlands for almost 40 years. We believe that no-one should have to live in fear of violence and abuse. We listen, we support, we care.

Story

I am deeply honoured to serve as High Sheriff of the County of West Midlands 2026/2027, and during my year in office I have chosen to focus my support on organisations that quietly, compassionately and tirelessly change lives for the better.

One charity that has profoundly impressed me is Black Country Women’s Aid.

I am proud to support their vital work across our communities, work that helps people rebuild their lives after domestic abuse, sexual violence, stalking and exploitation. These experiences do not just affect individuals; they affect families, neighbourhoods and future generations. When we help someone find safety, stability and dignity, we strengthen society as a whole.

My theme for the year is centred on supporting women and girls, championing safety, opportunity and dignity, while recognising that strong communities must work for everyone. Protecting and uplifting women and girls is essential, but so too is acknowledging that men and boys also need support, guidance and positive pathways, and can be powerful allies in creating safer, kinder communities.

Black Country Women’s Aid embodies this inclusive approach. They provide life changing services for individuals and families affected by abuse and exploitation, offering practical help, skilled advocacy and safe pathways forward. Their work gives people not just immediate protection, but something far more precious: hope, confidence and the chance of a stable future.

What has particularly moved me is their commitment to working in partnership with other Midland’s charities and services. This collaborative approach means that every pound donated goes further, multiplying impact, maximising resources and ensuring that no one falls through the gaps. It is thoughtful, responsible and deeply humane.

£4,000 could pay for 80, 1-2-1 therapy sessions to help young victim-survivors reclaim their childhoods and grow up stronger and safer.

£10,000 could provide specialist support for 7 vulnerable girls who at risk of offending, to help build their self-confidence, divert them away from online and real-world harm and develop new, positive interests and aspirations.

£20,000 could fit out 4 new refuge flats with furniture and home essentials to make them a warm, welcoming and safe space for families to stay.

Through this fundraising campaign, I hope to raise both awareness and vital funds to help sustain these essential services. But I cannot do this alone.

This is a personal appeal. If you are reading this, I am asking you to stand with me. Your support helps protect those who are vulnerable today, and helps build safer, stronger communities for tomorrow. Even a small donation can make a meaningful difference, and sharing this page with your own network could help raise five times more in support.

If you believe, as I do, that everyone deserves to live free from fear, with dignity and opportunity, I would be truly grateful for your help.

Thank you for supporting me in my year as High Sheriff and for supporting a cause that makes a real and lasting difference to us all.
