Whickham School is raising money for Batten Disease Family Association
Batten disease is a group of rare, progressive neurodegenerative, genetic metabolic diseases that occur in children & adults worldwide. The BDFA's Vision is to be the central point of excellence in the UK for supporting affected families funding research into a potential cure.

Story

Each year the new Year 12 cohort at Whickham School select a charity to benefit from our annual Charity Week activities. This year, students voted overwhelmingly to support the Batten Disease Family Association (BDFA)

Batten diseaseI is a fatal condition, primarily affecting children, for which there is currently no cure.

This rare genetic disorder affects brain cells, leading to progressive neurodegeneration and ultimately cell death. Children can lose their sight, their ability to walk and talk, and can develop seizures and other serious health problems. Batten disease is extremely rare, affecting around 150 people out of the 70 million living in the UK, with usually between 11 and 17 new diagnoses each year.

The BDFA is the only UK charity providing professional support specifically for people and families affected by Batten Disease. They provide families with practical, emotional and financial support which can include helping families understand the diagnosis, supporting them with education and healthcare and helping them to access important equipment.
