Story
How it all started
I first heard about Alfie Pentony’s battle with the deadly disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy [DMD] when I hit rock bottom in 2019. I had just returned home to Ireland from ten years of being out in the world chasing highs and taking chemical substances that altered my perception of reality. I was a broken shell of a human being when I landed home. I didn’t understand why my family were going out and putting on community fireworks displays and fundraising events for this wee lad Alfie. I didn’t understand why I had to hold a bucket in my hand on a freezing December night and ask for money from people. This is the selfish way I viewed the world as an addict. It was all about me and what I wanted. Nobody else mattered....
When I seen Alfie at fundraising events he seemed like he was in total control of his vibe running about and having fun like any other normal wee lad. One night I was itching to relapse and in a bad way mentally so I decided to keep my mind distracted and research what Fight for Alfie was all about. I looked on the website and read every page. A huge wave of awareness came over me. The floodgates opened and I became emotional seeing a young child and his parents suffer so much at hands of this monstrous affliction. I finally understood the gravity of the DMD disease, the pain it causes this courageous young warrior Alfie and children like him across the globe. I decided from then on I would approach any good cause with an open heart and an open mind.
This is why I am putting my body on the line to fight in this years Fit Club CIC White Collar boxing tournament on May 27th. I am putting somebody else’s needs before my own and learning more and more about who I am along this soulfully rewarding journey.
Fight For Alfie provides benefits to those diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and to their families and carers. With the use of funds, acquired by fundraising and public donations, they are able to help those affected by Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy with the provision of aids and support to help them access trials and improve their independence. Most importantly, they wish to educate as many as possible about all areas of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
