Story
Wilkinson Woodward are walking 30 miles to celebrate the life of Max. Max’s mum has been employed by Wilkinson Woodward for over 22 years. We are walking to celebrate Max’s love for adventure and also to fund raise for the Leeds General Infirmary Children’s Oncology Outreach Nurses (via the Candlelighters Charity); who supported Max throughout his life and their care and support enabled Max to be at home in peace and comfort with his family at the end of his life.
Max was diagnosed with an Ependymoma brain tumour on his brain stem, central nervous system and spine aged 9 months old. He endured 7 brain surgeries, 18 months of chemotherapy, 2 months of radiotherapy, 2 rounds of Gamma knife radiation therapy and 5 months of lumber port chemotherapy into his brain stem. Max had several disabilities and complex medical needs as a result. Max spent a large part of his life living in hospital as an inpatient or attending various outpatient appointments.
Max was a truly inspirational little boy who never let his disabilities get in his way. He never complained and was always laughing, singing and dancing. Max had a real thirst for adventure. In his time at home he loved to be out and about on land or in boats with the 12th Halifax Sea Scouts and his family, he loved swimming, he loved bouldering and rope climbing at Rokt, he loved going out on family bike rides (and would always shout to “go faster!”). Max loved camping, outdoor adventures, theme parks (particularly the roller coasters) and steam trains. He also loved being at home with his family and listening to his favourite music and dancing and reading his favourite books.
Max’s brain cancer sadly stopped responding to treatment this year and he died peacefully at home in the arms of his family on 27th March 2025 age 9 years old.
Max was a character who was larger than life and is very much missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Max’s family will forever be grateful for the expert medical care which enabled Max to live his life to the full and go on so many adventures at home. They will also be forever grateful to the Leeds General Infirmary Children’s Oncology Outreach Nurses who supported Max and his family during his life and enabled him to be comfortable and at home together with his family at the end of his life. It is crucial the Leeds General Infirmary Children’s Oncology Outreach Nurses continue to be supported and funded to perform their role and look after inspirational children like Max.
