Story
At a time when homelessness is as bad as ever here, the crucial work of YMCA Exeter can be absolutely transformational.
YMCA Exeter support over 600 young people every year in their time of need, helping them overcome adversity and reach their unique potential. This could be through the provision of housing after homelessness, 1-2-1 wellbeing support for mental health challenges, or workplace training and advice after a period of unemployment.
It shouldn't be the case that people and charities HAVE to rely on generous public donations to survive, but that is the society the government is fuelling and it isn't fair that people are the ones who lose out. It's still very positive the public are so generously donating even considering the cost-of-living crisis.
This is why I'm also really impressed with Si Johns at YMCA's determined, vocal work to make Devon County Council keep its £1.5 million homelessness prevention fund for at least another year. This budget also saves money in the long-run as it prevents greater costs to pop-up elsewhere in overstretched ambulance, police, and mental health services.
It takes challenging, committed work to address multi-faceted homelessness-related issues. Ensuring these safety nets is how we can enable people to fulfil their potential.
I'm thrilled to support YMCA Exeter by running the Great West Run half-marathon this Sunday 26th May and if you can sponsor me, however small the donation, it all adds up and is much appreciated.
