Story
After a failed first attempt in 2020 due to an inconveniently timed pandemic, I've decided to attempt the London Marathon again, this time for Myaware - the only charity in the UK dedicated solely to the care and support of people affected by myasthenia
Three years ago, I was diagnosed with myaesthenia gravis, a rare chronic autoimmune disease that causes muscular weakness. At the peak of my symptoms I suffered with double vision (commonly referred to as my pirate era after wearing an eye patch for 4 months) and struggled to move one of my arms and legs. I was reliant on close friends to do basic tasks like going to the supermarket and walking up stairs. After many tests and three years of taking steroids and other drugs, I stopped taking medication late last year.
Thankful for being one of the 15% of people who manage their myaesthinia with no drugs and symptoms, I've decided to try to raise some much needed funding for Myaware to help others with the condition. Myaware support people affected by myasthenia, raise awareness about these conditions, fund research to find new therapies to reduce the impact of the conditions and ultimately find a cure - https://www.myaware.org/
I've started training early to give my muscles the time they needs to recover as I build up the miles. My aim is just to get around the course - hopefully before the man in the diving suit!
It would mean the world to me and Myaware if you were to donate whatever you can to support us.
Thank you,
Will
