Running the Western Arthur Range Traverse, Tasmania

Myeloma Australia is the only dedicated myeloma charity in Australia, providing vital support, education, and advocacy for patients and families. We’re committed to improving lives through expert care and awareness. Your support will help us make a difference.

Story

In December later this year I've set myself the lofty goal of running the Western Arthur Range Traverse in South West Tasmania. I'll be attempting to run it in under 24 hours with a group of others, including my brother, raising money for Myeloma Australia. The traverse is considered one of Tasmania's most challenging walks that covers approximately 60km with almost 4000m of elevation throughout. The Western Arthur's are usually undertaken as a 5-7 day bushwalk, so it's safe to say we're in for a long day!

I've chosen to raise money for Myeloma Australia due to my mum's Multiple Myeloma diagnosis in September of 2018. Multiple Myeloma is fairly unknown and a very underfunded form of blood cancer that impacts plasma, a type of white blood cell that resides in one's bone marrow. This form of cancer currently has no cure. Treatments for this type of cancer can sometimes require visits to large major cities such as Melbourne or Sydney, often for months at a time. This can be incredibly difficult for those who live in more rural and regional parts of Australia.

I have chosen to team up with Myeloma Australia as they are the only Australian myeloma specific not-for-profit organisation. They support, educate, inform, empower and bring hope to people who are living with myeloma, and their loved ones. They also facilitate myeloma research in Australia; educate health professionals involved in the care and treatment of those living with myeloma; raise community awareness and understanding of myeloma; and advocate for improved patient access to the latest treatments at affordable prices.

Having personally dealt with Myeloma Australia, myself and my family can proudly vouch for them being incredible, offering amazing levels of support for an organisation that currently receives no government funding.

Thank you!
