Story

I'm raising money for the Pseudo Obstruction Research Trust (PORT) by riding the Fred Whitton Challenge on May 11th. The Fred Whitton Challenge is one the toughest one-day cycling events in the UK, covering 112 miles with 3,500 meters climbing over all the major passes in the Lake District.

This cause is incredibly close to my heart, as my young nephew has been diagnosed with Pseudo Bowel Syndrome, a rare and challenging condition that has drastically impacted his life and the lives of those around him.

Pseudo Bowel Syndrome, also known as Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction, mimics the symptoms of a severe bowel blockage without any physical obstruction. The condition disrupts the normal movements of the intestines, leading to chronic pain, severe bloating, nausea, and difficulties digesting food. This lifelong condition requires ongoing medical intervention, including medications, surgeries, and nutritional support. For my nephew, this has meant constant hospital visits, complex treatments, and a daily battle to manage symptoms that many of us could never imagine.

The impact on his family has been immense. Everyday routines are disrupted by emergency hospital trips, and the emotional toll of watching a loved one suffer is indescribable. The family has had to adjust their lives completely, focusing on managing his care and creating a semblance of normalcy amidst uncertainty.

This is where the Pseudo Obstruction Research Trust (PORT) steps in. PORT is dedicated to funding research into the causes, treatments, and potential cures for severe motility disorders like Pseudo Bowel Syndrome. They also provide support, education, and resources to affected families, helping them navigate complex medical needs and advocating for better treatments and care. PORT’s work offers hope to families struggling with these rare and debilitating conditions.

By supporting PORT, you’re helping to drive vital research and provide critical support to families like ours. Your donation will enable PORT to continue their mission, offering hope and a better future for those living with Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction. Please consider donating today—every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference.
