Story
I am running the Oxford Half Marathon on 15th October 2023 to raise money for the Malaria Consortium charity, in honour of my late mentor Professor Dominic Kwiatkowski.
Dominic dedicated his working life to the study of malaria, an infectious disease that kills around 600,000 people per year, mainly young children living in sub-Saharan Africa. He worked as a paediatrician in The Gambia, and pioneered the use of genetic techniques to study malaria disease and treatments. He was my PhD supervisor, friend and mentor. He sadly died in April 2023. You can read more about his life here - https://www.malariagen.net/blog/obituary-dominic-p-kwiatkowski.
Malaria Consortium, in its own words, is “one of the world’s leading non-profit organisations specialising in the prevention, control and treatment of malaria and other communicable diseases among vulnerable populations. Our mission is to save lives and improve health in Africa and Asia, through evidence-based programmes that combat targeted diseases and promote universal health coverage” - https://www.malariaconsortium.org/. Malaria Consortium has been rated a “top charity” by GiveWell - https://www.givewell.org/charities/malaria-consortium.
