Story
On 26 September, 800 pupils and staff from Winchester College too to the hills, covering distances ranging from 6.5km to a half-marathon, aiming to raise £20000 for SolarAid.
SolarAid envisions a world where everyone has access to clean, renewable energy. Today, nearly 600 million people across sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity. When the sun sets, the working day ends for millions, and for many others, the only source of light is harmful kerosene lamps and paraffin candles, which emit toxic fumes that threaten health and the environment. Every solar light placed in someone's hands is an immediate victory for both people and the planet, transforming lives overnight with clean, safe power.
Our Solar Cycle event last term has allowed SolarAid to provide the entire town of Kasakula, Malawi with solar lamps - all 8813 homes, 12 schools and the health centre can now provide safer nights and meaningful opportunities for learning, healthcare, and work after dark.
With your support, SolarAid can achieve more. If we reach our goal of raising £20000, SolarAid will be able provide 1800 solar lights to communities without electricity, protecting 8000 people at home, and enabling 1500 more children to study after dark.
Join us to bring hope, safety, and opportunities to communities across rural Africa. Step by step, light by light, together we can truly light up lives!
