Winchester College Solar Cycle 2025

Winchester College is raising money for SolarAid

Winchester College PE Centre · 14 June 2025

When the sun goes down the working day ends for millions of people without electricity. At the flick of a switch, lives can be instantly changed with a solar light. SolarAid wants to make real, sustainable change happen.

Story

On Wykeham Day (June 14), pupils from all houses and dons will aim to cycle 2000km on a virtual route through sub-Saharan Africa, where SolarAid works. This will take place at our new PE Centre. Parents are welcome to spectate and get involved!

We are supporting our school's international charity, SolarAid. We aim to raise £6000, which will allow SolarAid to buy and distribute 400 solar lights, reach out to over 2000 people and light up roughly one person's life for every kilometre we cycle. This will allow about 400 more children to study after dark.

SolarAid’s vision is of a world where everyone has access to clean, renewable, energy. 590 million people across sub-Saharan Africa live without electricity. When the sun goes down the working day ends for millions of people. For others, the only option is polluting kerosene lamps and paraffin candles. Every solar light in someone’s hand is an instant win for people and the planet.
